Does NameDrop Work With Android? No — Here's What Actually Does

No. NameDrop is an Apple feature that works between two iPhones, or an iPhone and an Apple Watch. It does not work with Android, and Apple has never said it does.

That is the whole answer. The more useful question is what you do about it, because roughly half the people you meet are on the other platform — and there are exactly two things that work on both. Here is the honest breakdown.

What NameDrop actually is

NameDrop arrived with iOS 17 in September 2023, as part of the AirDrop family. You hold two iPhones close together, both screens light up, and you can exchange contact details without typing (Apple's own guide).

It works between two iPhones, and between an iPhone and an Apple Watch — Watch SE (2nd generation) and later, Series 7 and later, and Ultra models, on watchOS 10.1 with iOS 17.1 or newer. Android does not appear anywhere in Apple's documentation for it. Neither, incidentally, does iPad.

What it shares — and what it leaves out

This is the part that surprises people who assume NameDrop replaces a business card. It doesn't, and it isn't trying to.

NameDrop sends your name, one phone number or email address that you choose, and your Contact Poster — the photo-and-font design on your contact card. Apple states plainly that it does not include other fields such as your home address or birthday (Apple, Personal Safety Guide).

Which means it cannot carry:

  • Your Instagram, TikTok, or LinkedIn
  • Your website or portfolio
  • Your booking page or menu
  • Your payment link
  • More than one way to reach you

If your work lives anywhere other than a phone number — and for stylists, trainers, photographers, artists, creators and most small businesses it does — NameDrop hands over the least interesting thing about you.

The physical requirements nobody mentions

Both phones have to be unlocked and awake, held within a few centimeters — essentially touching — and held there until the prompt appears on both screens. Pull them apart early and it cancels. Then each side chooses “share and receive” or “receive only,” and the sharer picks which details to include.

That is a genuinely well-designed flow between two people who both know what they are doing. It is a slightly awkward one with a stranger you met ninety seconds ago, holding a drink.

“Is NameDrop a security risk?”

It is on by default, which is what caused a wave of police-department warnings in late 2023. Independent fact-checkers looked at those and found them overblown: nothing transfers without the two phones being held together and an explicit on-screen confirmation of exactly what to share (PolitiFact, Full Fact). Nobody is lifting your number out of your pocket.

Is Android building its own version?

Not yet — and as of now it has not shipped. Worth being precise here, because a lot of coverage reads as though it exists.

Evidence of a proximity contact-sharing feature first surfaced in November 2025 in a teardown of Google Play Services beta code, under the internal name “Gesture Exchange.” More appeared in early 2026 in Android 17 and One UI beta code as “Tap to Share.” Android 17 shipped to Pixel in June 2026, and teardown reporting as late as July 2026 still described the feature as unreleased with no rollout date. There is no Google blog post, support document, or launch announcement for it.

So: it looks real, it looks close, and it is not something you can use today.

What about Quick Share and AirDrop?

Quick Share (formerly Nearby Share) is Android's proximity sharing tool — photos, files, links. Google's own documentation doesn't list contact cards among what it sends. Since late 2025 it has gained the ability to exchange files with Apple devices on qualifying handsets, but only when the iPhone is set to AirDrop's “Everyone for 10 Minutes” mode rather than its default, and it carries no contact data.

AirDrop itself, per Apple's documentation, sends to “a nearby iPhone, iPad, or Mac.” Android is not in that list.

The pattern is consistent: the fast, elegant, one-gesture options all stop at the platform boundary. That is not an oversight, it is how they were designed.

The two things that work on both platforms

Both of these work because they rely on nothing more than a web address and a browser.

1. A QR code

The camera app on both iPhone and Android reads a QR code and offers the link (Apple, Google). Free, and it works from a screenshot in your camera roll. The cost is choreography: they have to unlock, open the camera, aim, and wait — which is more steps than it sounds like in a loud room.

2. An NFC tag

A tag holding a URL is read by both platforms with no app on the other person's side. On iPhone, supported models read tags in the background and show a notification you tap (Apple's model list — iPhone XR, XS, SE 2nd generation and later do this automatically; iPhone 7, 8 and X need the NFC Tag Reader turned on in Control Center first).

On Android the same thing happens, and the behavior has just changed in a way worth knowing: from Android 16 a tag holding a web link opens through the standard view action, and from Android 17 the system shows an “open link” notification “requiring explicit user interaction” first (Android developer docs). Both platforms now behave identically: a tag suggests a link, a human taps it.

Neither method is universal on its own — some phones have NFC turned off, and a few don't have it at all. Carrying both is what makes the combination reliable, and it is why any honest NFC product ships with a QR backup rather than claiming it works with every phone on earth.

So what should you actually do?

If everyone you meet is on an iPhone and a phone number is all you need to hand over, NameDrop is genuinely good and it is already on your phone. Use it.

If you meet people on both platforms, or what you need to share is bigger than a phone number, you need something that lives on the open web instead of inside one company's ecosystem. That is a link — delivered by a tap, with a QR code as the fallback.
