How Car Salespeople Follow Up and Close More Deals
Share
Car buyers almost never buy on the first visit, and they almost always visit more than one dealership. Which means the deal is usually decided by who stayed in contact properly — not who gave the best pitch on the lot.
Get contactable both ways before they leave
Most salespeople take a number and hand over a card. Half those numbers are wrong and most of those cards are binned. Make sure they leave with your details in their phone — in a form they'll actually find again — and that you have a way to reach them that isn't a scribble on a test-drive form. Some methods complete on the lot and some leave the customer with homework; only one of those survives the drive home.
Follow up the same day, with something useful
Not “just checking in.” Send the specific vehicle, the photos, the finance numbers you discussed. Useful gets opened; checking in gets ignored. The three-line version works here almost unchanged.
Answer the finance question honestly and early
Monthly payment anxiety is what stalls most deals. Being straight about the numbers early builds more trust than any feature walk-around.
Know when to stop pushing
Three useful contacts over two weeks, then leave the door open. Buyers who feel chased go elsewhere out of spite; buyers who feel helped come back weeks later.
The customer you already sold is your best lead
Delivery day is the peak of the relationship. That's when you ask for the review and the referral — not six months later. And a message at the twelve-month mark, before they start browsing again, is how you keep them from walking into someone else's showroom.
Be findable outside the dealership
People ask friends who to see about a car, and the answer needs to be a person, not a building. If your customers can pass your details to a friend in one tap, you get deals that never touch the dealership's lead system — which is really a question of how findable you are months later, not how good the pitch was.
Keep your inventory link current
If someone shares your details, the first thing the new person does is look. Make sure what they land on shows current stock and a way to reach you directly.
An AirLnk Smart Card handles the handover: your inventory, finance calculator and direct line open on their phone, and because you update the profile rather than reprint, the card in their glovebox is still right a year later when they're ready to trade in.
